Cancún is a top resort destination in the world, and it might be a challenge to narrow down where to stay. I had the opportunity to stay at the Occidental Costa Cancún, an all-inclusive resort and had an ultimate relaxing time. If waking up to the ocean and spending your days in the sun sound like an ideal vacation, then the Occidental Costa Cancún is where you have to be.

The Resort: Occidental Costa Cancún

Occidental Costa Cancún is an all-inclusive resort located on the north part of the Cancún hotel zone. It is about a 25 minute ride from the Cancún International Airport to the hotel. I highly recommend booking a transfer via the hotel. The last thing you want to do after a flight is try to haggle a taxi for a decent price.

The resort has 350 rooms, an oversized pool with built in sun loungers, private beach area, a gift shop, spa, four restaurants and two bars. The resort has a cozy feel as it wasn’t too big or overwhelming to explore.

What does All-inclusive really mean?

When booking a room at an all-inclusive resort, you may be wary of what that actually includes. Of course, each hotel will be different but at the Occidental Costa Cancún the all-inclusive rate includes: the room price, all meals and beverages including alcohol, access to the fitness center, and all entertainment at the beach and pool. Some things you can add on to the base rate is wifi, transfers from the hotel to airport, spa services, excursions, and premium wines at dinner.

All-Inclusive Food

The all-inclusive rate includes a breakfast and lunch buffet at the Albatross restaurant which has outdoor ocean front seating. Even-though it was August in Cancún, I always requested a table outside just for the stunning views. The buffet was surprisingly good. I was pleased to see that the options changed day to day. In addition to having the buffet style breakfast and lunch, there is also a 24 hour snack bar available with snacks and beverages.

For breakfast there was a range of sweet to savory options with a fresh egg station and Mexican specialties of Chilaquiles and breakfast quesadillas. I also can’t forget to mention the fun doughnut wall that I had to refrain from. The lunch buffet had a wide range of options as well including fish, chicken, salads, potatoes, and fresh fruit.

I liked having a buffet style breakfast and lunch, as it allowed flexibility in your schedule. You could have a quick bite, or take your time enjoying your meal. Even though it was a buffet, I didn’t find myself overeating throughout this trip, except maybe having a few too many ice cream cones to go.

The other three restaurants: Mexican Lindo, Trattoria, and La Claraboya are for dinner service only, and you have to make a reservation in the morning the day-of. I tried all three restaurants, and found the Mexican Lindo to be my favorite. At these restaurants you order off menu, just like a regular restaurant as it is included in your rate. However, you can always add on a premium bottle of wine for an additional charge.

All-Inclusive Beverage

You heard it right, unlimited beverages! Your room rate includes unlimited beverages including alcohol. The drink menu offered more than 10 types of cocktails. My favorite was the frozen Pina Colada. The cocktails weren’t that strong, so I ended up ordering Coronas while relaxing at the pool. At dinner they offered the full drink menu, but I opted for the house red wine and was pleasantly surprised of the quality. Even though it was an all-inclusive the vibe of the hotel isn’t rowdy which I liked. There was a sense of overall relaxed vibe.

The Room: King Sea Front View

I stayed in a King Sea Front View room on the ground level that offered beach front access just steps from the room. I loved the proximity to the beach, and enjoyed sitting on the private outside patio admiring the views. With the all-inclusive rate, your room includes a mini fridge that is stocked with water bottles, canned Coronas, canned sodas, and light snacks that gets replenished daily. I would highly suggest getting a Sea Front View. The views are definitely worth it.

Entertainment at Occidental Costa Cancún

While the resort is on the smaller side, there are multiple daily activities that you can take part of. They offer daily kayaking and snorkeling to a nearby sandbar. There you can spot an abandoned jet-ski and plenty of fish. This was defiantly my favorite activity and would recommend taking apart of it. They leave from the beach every morning at 10:30am.

They also offer dance lessons, water aerobics, water volleyball, bingo, and entertainment like saxophonists. In addition, they have nightly performances on a main stage with acts ranging from Mexican performances to Magic shows.

The Service:

The service and hospitality was exceptional. I loved the friendly service and recognition from the staff members. I didn’t have a bad experience from anyone at the hotel which made me feel right at home.
